This past week the five counties of Scott, Carver, Anoka, Washington and Dakota Counties met together as one group in an unprecedented meeting with the Metropolitan Council. The Metropolitan Council is now in the process of creating a plan that will cripple our regional highway system at the expense of bike paths and transit-way investments in the urban core. They want to over invest in highly subsidized transit-ways and bike paths, spending billions of dollars, and call our congested highway system complete. From 2014 to 2022 their plan calls for just 72 million dollars to be invested annually to relieve congestion on our regional highways.
The Metropolitan Council’s plan creates real winners and real losers in our region. The winners will be Minneapolis and St. Paul and the losers will be the rest of the region of suburban cities and counties of our metropolitan area. There was one leader that challenged all of us to come together to speak up and air our concerns to the Metropolitan Council. That leader was Scott County Commissioner Jon Ulrich. He believes that the Metropolitan Councils plan is short sighted and lacks a vision that will keep our economy growing. It came as no surprise to me that Jon Ulrich was selected as our spokesman when we met together to challenge the Metropolitan Council’s plans. During his tenure on the County Board, Jon Ulrich has consistently demonstrated the leadership that is needed to be a voice that is heard in our region. He is a man of integrity and conviction that others listen to and respect.
We need Jon Ulrich’s leadership on our County Board. I am enthusiastically encouraging the voters of Savage to re-elect Jon Ulrich to the County Board so that he can continue to serve you well.
Scott County Commissioner
